How Can Federal Direct Loans Help Pay for College or Career School Expenses?

Direct Loans are low-interest loans for students and parents to help pay for the cost of a student’s education after high school. The lender is the U.S. Department of Education (the Department) rather than a bank or other fi nancial institution.

Direct Loans are:
■ Simple—You borrow directly from the federal government and have a single contact—the Direct Loan Servicing Center—for everything related to
the repayment of your loans, even if you receive Direct Loans at different schools.
■ Convenient—You’ll have online access to your Direct Loan account information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
■ Flexible—You can choose from several repayment plans that are designed to meet the needs of almost any borrower, and you can switch repayment plans if your needs change.

Farm Loan Programs

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) makes direct and guaranteed operating and farm ownership loans to eligible farmers and ranchers. Under its direct operating loan program, USDA also makes loans to rural youth to establish and operate income-producing projects of modest size in connection with their participation in 4-H clubs, FFA, and similar organizations. Guaranteed loans are made through private lenders with a guarantee of up to 95 percent of the loss of princ ipal and interest. Direct and guaranteed operating loans can be used to purchase livestock, equipment, feed, seed, and other material essential to a farm or ranch operation. Direct and guaranteed farm ownership loan funds may be used to purchase land, construct buildings, or make farm improvements. Guaranteed operating and farm ownership loans may also be used to refinance debt.
